Youth Organizer
Position Title: Youth Organizer
Classification: Part-Time (Hourly)
Reports To: Lead Community Outreach Specialist, Program Manager
Pay Scale: $18-$23/hour Flexible hours 10-25 hours per week
Work Location: Gilroy & Hollister, CA
Job Summary:
With support from the South County Team, the Youth Organizer (YO) will support the development and base building of the organization. The YO will facilitate programs, events, and campaigns to bring awareness to changes in the systems that impact them such as education, juvenile justice, and health to help youth advocate for a just community. The YO will work with youth in building power that allows them to educate, advocate, and mobilize the community to create school or community changes that reflect their needs and interests. The YO will work to co-create virtual and in-person spaces after school, evenings, and weekends with youth to foster leadership and organizing skills to understand and challenge systems of oppression. Using innovation and creativity such as art, dance, writing, and photography, the YO will challenge systems of oppression, conduct organizing, build awareness, and cultivate individual and collective healing in communities. Program and outreach goals will be collectively generated by the youth organizer, YA members, and the Education and Justice Team.
Typical Responsibilities And Duties:
Build a base of engaged youth leaders interested in advocating for youth, education equity, and racial justice in Morgan Hill/Gilroy, or San Benito County.
Develop relationships with teachers and faculty at local schools/community colleges.
Email supporters and partners to keep them informed on upcoming events.
Prepare and coordinate regular meetings with youth members (e.g., workshops, meetings, team building, political education, healing, etc.)
Conduct regular outreach efforts in high schools and the community.
Coordinate phone banking for YA members regularly to ensure attendance and follow-up tasks.
Phone bank youth members for upcoming meetings and events.
Co-lead a youth summit or events with other volunteer organizers and the Youth Justice Team for local youth.
Organize at least one community event to raise awareness of the school-to-prison pipeline.
Develop youth leadership and organize community engagement events.
Work with the YJT to develop a Youth Agenda, and intergenerational conversations about education equity, racial justice, etc.
Job Responsibilities:
Work with the YA team to develop engagement strategies for young people to increase participation and access to needed resources for healing, leadership, and connection.
With support from the South County Team, track YA budget and monitor expenses as needed.
Attend coalition meetings and regular YA meetings as appropriate.
Update YA folder with notes, sign-in sheets, and other/any materials created.
Be in communication with YA and YJT on tasks under the supervision of the director.
Submit bi-weekly work plans and invoices to Staff for approval.
Help lead ongoing youth organizer and bi-monthly Youth Council meetings.
Participate in Monthly coordinating committee check-ins.
Attend leadership development trainings and support others in also attending.
Support in Grants by meeting and tracking deliverables (activities).
Participate in regional and statewide coalitions as applicable.

Experience and Job Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Open to Youth ages 18 - 25 years old.
Understanding and/or commitment to advancing the mission of YA, youth power, and the statewide Dignity in Schools Campaign.
At least 1 year of previous organizing experience or involvement with youth organizing initiatives.
Ability to work closely and effectively with other people and organizations.
Have existing connections with schools in the area or the ability to make connections.
Demonstrated commitment to immigrant, gender, and racial justice.
Ability to work professionally in a deadline-driven environment.
Experience with outreach and desire to grow in grassroots organizing skills.
Available to work flexible hours, including afternoons and occasional evening and weekend events.
Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Helpful Skills and Qualifications but not Required
Previous or active participant in YA programs or attended a YA event.
Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and a variety of applications.
California driver’s license, insurance, and regular access to a 4‐5 seat passenger car.
Experience with one or more of the following areas: action research, campaign strategy, curriculum, development, alliance building, media outreach, grassroots fundraising, and educational policy.
Has experience in and/or knowledge of the culture and history of organizing and education advocacy.
Fluency in a second language.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Assistance is required above this amount. Be willing to work flexible hours at the discretion of the Lead Community Outreach Specialist and/or the Program Manager.
Special Requirements:
Must be able to meet and receive Fingerprinting/Background Check and TB Test clearance as required by the school district to work with children in a school setting. Must be physically able to assist participants and/or staff in the evacuation of program facilities in emergencies.
